• Project name: The Apex King’s Cross

  • Location: London, UK

  • Scope of work: Facade structural engineering.

Overview:

The Apex is the inaugural building of the Tribeca development, London’s largest purpose-built life sciences campus, situated in the heart of the King’s Cross Knowledge Quarter. Spanning over 112,000 sq ft across six floors, the building offers state-of-the-art laboratory and office spaces designed to foster innovation and collaboration in the bioscience sector.

Key features:

  • Design & Architecture: The building’s design emphasizes transparency and connectivity, featuring a glazed façade that integrates seamlessly with the surrounding environment. The ground floor houses a public café and event space, promoting community engagement. Upper levels provide flexible lab and office spaces with floor-to-ceiling heights of 4 meters.

  • Sustainability: A standout feature of The Apex is the use of 13,000 earth blocks made from subsoil excavated directly from the site to construct the basement perimeter walls. This method resulted in an 84% reduction in carbon emissions and saved 93 cubic meters of waste compared to traditional materials. Additionally, the building incorporates low-carbon concrete, a blue roof water management system, and has achieved a BREEAM Outstanding rating.

  • Community Engagement: The project has created significant local employment opportunities, including 30 apprenticeships and 36 work placements for Camden residents. Furthermore, a minimum of 10% of the contract value was reinvested within the borough, demonstrating a strong commitment to social value.
